This paper is intended to provide students with an appreciation of the legal issues arising from business and electronic commerce. Students should develop the ability to identify the problems which they may face in the area, thereby assisting them in arriving at a solution.

The impact of the World Wide Web has been felt universally, not least in relation to the determination and enforcement of legal responsibilities. More than any other development in history, it has diminished the significance of national boundaries as the determinant of applicable and enforceable laws.

The focus of the paper is on the following:

A. Development and consideration of the principle legal concepts of relevance to business and E-commerce.

B. Consideration of the specific legal issues faced by those in business and challenges from the internet. The most important of these are:

  • Intellectual Property
  • Privacy and Security
  • Consumer Protection

This paper is intended first, to provide students with an appreciation of the legal issues arising from electronic commerce. Secondly, the students should develop the ability to identify the problems which they may face in the area, thereby assisting them in arriving at a solution.
The focus of the paper is on the following:
A. Development and consideration of the principle legal concepts of relevance to E-commerce.
B. Consideration of the specific legal issues faced by those practicing in the area of E-commerce. The most important of these are:
i. Intellectual Property
ii. Privacy and Security
iii. Consumer Protection

The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 7:3. There is no final exam. The final exam makes up 30% of the overall mark.
